About the guide
A catalogue built by collectors
What the Australian Chip Guide covers, how chips are numbered, and how you can help.
The Australian Chip Guide is a catalogue of the chips and tokens used in Australian casinos, and in the clubs, ships and venues around them. It records each chip’s casino, value, colour, mould and inlay, pictures it front and back wherever we can, and gives it a permanent catalogue number.
What’s in the guide
The core of the guide is the licensed casinos, from Wrest Point, which opened in Hobart in 1973 as Australia’s first legal casino, to the casinos operating today. Around them are the pieces collectors also record:
- Chips from casinos that have closed or changed names, such as Burswood, Star City and Treasury.
- Cruise-ship casino chips from ships sailing out of Australian ports.
- Chips from unlicensed clubs that operated outside the law.
- Poker league, tournament, promotional, souvenir and training chips.
- Harley-Davidson dealer chips and tokens from other venues.
- New Zealand casinos, which are collected alongside Australia’s.
Catalogue numbers
Every chip has an ACG number, such as ACG04171. It is the chip’s permanent ID: descriptions get corrected and photos get replaced, but the number stays the same. Quote it when you contact us about a chip or list one for trade.
How the guide is built
The guide is maintained by collectors, and much of it exists because collectors sent in photos and information. We check what we receive, add it with credit where the contributor wants it, and correct entries when better information turns up. If you spot an error or have a chip we don’t, please tell us.
Values
Where the guide gives an estimated value it is a rough guide to what collectors pay, not an offer or a valuation. Prices vary with condition and demand.
No gambling here
This is a collectors’ reference. We are not affiliated with any casino, and we don’t offer, promote or link to gambling. If gambling is causing problems for you or someone close to you, free and confidential help is available at Gambling Help Online or by calling 1800 858 858.
